We are proud to offer this print from Granger, NYC / The Granger Collection in collaboration with Granger Art on Demand. Thus, Brunelleschi's dome has an internal diameter of 44m and is 32 m tall, while the base is 52m high above the ground (this is like a ten-story house on top of a 17 one). It has, they say, 40 000 tons of bricks, on a stone masonry base about 4 m high. Also, the lantern above the central top opening is 16 m high.

Brunelleschi left no diagrams or written instructions on how he built this dome. It has been a mystery for centuries. But in 2012, twelve years after this book was written, a mini-dome measuring 9 feet in circumference was unearthed near Florence's cathedral. It was found under a construction workshop used during Brunelleschi's day.

Brunelleschi's design contained two shells for the dome, an inner shell made of a lightweight material, and an outer shell of heavier wind-resistant materials. By creating two domes, Brunelleschi solved the problem of weight during construction because workers could sit atop the inner shell to build the outer shell of the dome. Brunelleschi's capacity to integrate the tradition in the new architecture, which already showed in the dome of the cathedral, was also highlighted in the two churches made with basilical plan: San Lorenzo and Santo Spirito.
